Clean beauty is everywhere — on product labels, social media, and beauty shelves, but what does “clean beauty” actually mean? And how do you choose products that are right for your skin, not just trending online?
At Just BeYOUtiful, we believe clean beauty should feel supportive and empowering, not confusing. Here’s what clean beauty really means, and how to shop it with confidence.
Is there an official definition of clean beauty?
There isn’t a single legal or universal definition of clean beauty. Unlike organic certification, “clean” isn’t governed by one global standard and even the term "organic" is open to manipulation. If a product states on its label that it is "organic" then only one ingredient in the product has to be organic to meet the label criteria.
Clean beauty is best understood as a set of values, not a rigid checklist, although I and a lot of other faith clean beauty makeup artists out there, would like to see stronger regulations brought in so that consumers truly know what they are buying.
For us, clean beauty means:
-
A sustainable and eco conscious approach to creating and packaging formulas
-
Transparent ingredient lists
-
No unnecessary or questionable ingredients
-
Brands that prioritise skin health and long-term health results
Clean beauty isn’t one-size-fits-all
One of the biggest myths around clean beauty is that there’s one “right” way to do it. In reality, your skin type, sensitivities, lifestyle, and goals all matter.
You do not have to go out tomorrow and throw all of your current products away and replace each one immediately. This is not a sustainable approach to recycling your products and can cause overwhelm. If you are not yet fully on the clean beauty path and would like to be then just take it one step at a time. When a product is about to run out, start doing a little bit of research and see what you would like to replace it with. We are always here for advice and a chat so just drop us a message via our contact form or a DM on Instagram.
How to choose clean beauty products that work for you
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, these simple guidelines can help.
Look for transparency
Brands should clearly explain what’s in their products and why. Ingredient lists shouldn’t feel like a mystery.
Use apps & clean websites The Think Dirty and Yukka apps are very helpful at guiding you in the right direction as is EWG. Their directory is full of products and product ratings.
Prioritise performance
Clean beauty should still deliver results. Skincare and makeup should feel good on your skin and actually do what they promise.
Listen to your skin
If something doesn’t feel right, even if it’s marketed as clean, it’s okay to move on. We can still have sensitivities to clean ingredients-I am allergic to strawberry extract on my skin-so if something does not work out then do not panic. Just reach out and ask for some advice!
Start simple
You don’t need to change everything at once. Swapping one or two products is a great place to begin.
Our approach at Just BeYOUtiful

Clean beauty should feel reassuring, not overwhelming.
